NEW YORK, July 15 (Reuters) - IBM on Thursday posted a higher quarterly profit that beat analysts' expectations as businesses bought more computers, technology services and software.
International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM), the world's largest computer company, said second-quarter net income rose to $2.0 billion, or $1.16 a share, from $1.7 billion, or 97 cents a share, a year earlier, including items.
Revenue at the Armonk, New York-based company, whose stock gained on the news, rose to $23.2 billion from $21.6 billion a year earlier.
Analysts expected the company to report earnings of $1.12 a share and revenue of $23.33 billion, within a range of $23.04 billion to $23.74 billion, according to Reuters Estimates.
IBM is often seen as an indicator for the broader technology sector because it sells everything from tiny microchips to computer software and services to extremely powerful mainframe computers.
IBM shares rose in after-hours trade to $85.49, from their close of $84.02 on the New York Stock Exchange.
