Our firm found the same thing & has even done a little recruiting based on this. The rationale came from the fact that we have annual in house video game tournaments & the top gamers also turned out to be the top traders every year. During the training period some emphasis is placed on this & daily tournaments are held. It's an area the company is looking into in more detail.

I recall a TV interview with a high ranking US military official that discussed this too. He said as technology advances, more & more missions will be run using unmanned aircraft & their research suggests screen based pilots would come from video game backgrounds. During the same interview a civil aviation official felt that regular air travel has the technology to replace pilots today but the public prefer human pilots & aren't yet ready for computers to fly them.

It's tremendously important in short term screen based trading where a lot of trading is based on flow, reading the order book. Without it one would struggle to make a living to be honest.

In particular spreads but also outrights require very quick responses to opportunities that appear for fractions of a second at times & those fractions can cost very large sums of money.

Imagine trying to watch multiple order books & charts while simultaneously using the keyboard & mouse to trade. Quick responses can be the difference between a profit & a loss.

Today's prop shops, training young people to be electronic traders, look for hand eye coordination for those traders who will be scalpers, spreaders and otherwise active traders. The skill set and psychology for using a gameboy is similar. Trade fast and accurate, with good strategy, or be killed.

There are actually traders on the CME floor trading eminis who use joy sticks with their computers to interact with the screens.

If you use auto-spreader from TT, which claims that 50% of the electronic volume on the major exchanges comes through their X_Trader system, then you need to be able to quickly interact with the screen if you get part of a spread on and need to proactively manage the balance.

Also, there are a bunch of prop shops, electronic market makers, who use automated price injjection models to run algorithms to inject bids and offers into the markets. Even though these systems have automated exit strategies, there is also a human override when advisable. Thus, even a high level computerized automated electronic trader needs to be able to quickly interact with the market and hand eye coordination will come in handy.

Also, hand eye coordination comes in handy so you don't spill coffee or coca cola all over your computer's key board. ;-)

My guess is that it has more to do with competitiveness than reflexes. The best people are going to be the best people, whether the event is trading, video games, or who can rake the leaves the fastest. Some people just have a bigger compulsion to win and will do what it takes in order to make that happen.

Having said that, when I was in flight school I had an instructor pilot who asked where I was from. I told him I grew up in California, and he commented that Californians tended to do better in Army flight school, attributing it to skateboarding, bike riding, and other activities popular there at the time. Something about enhancing balance skills.

I must agree with Tom on his point about competitiveness and drive.

Charles' comment about chess players and football players probably has more to do with his innate bias about what a chess player is and what a football player is, and his desire to make a funny comment. Charles probably does not know, for instance, that Chief's running back Priest Holmes runs a chess foundation in Kansas City.

Chess and cards are commonly played by athletes on road trips. Bankers Trust used to advertise in Chess Life for traders because the skills needed are similar. They found similar results with bridge players and poker players. Warren Buffett, Ace Greenberg, and Jimmy Kayne are all life masters in bridge.
The late Ken Smith, who several times won the World Poker Championship, was also a senior master in chess.

Many former high-caliber athletes are also involved in trading. Monroe Trout would be one example. Hall of Fame NFL lineman John Hannah has been a client of our firm for years.

There is a common psychological test that goes by the name NAch--"need for achievement." It identifies people that are driven to achieve mastery of whatever their chosen field is. And they tend not to leave other fields alone. If they pick up a new hobby, they tend also to want to master that. The common psychological finding is that people who are driven to achieve excellence tend toward that in everything they do. So Tom's observation is on the mark, in my opinion, and backed by psychological research.

I think Charles micro-structure term is relevant here. Different types of trading require different skill sets. Compare a floor trader with a screen based prop trader, position trader, portfolio manager, etc. Each one requires different & sometimes unique skills.

Talk to any successful trader at my firm, or one of the many like it & all will say that fast reactions, information processing, hand-eye coordination or whatever else you may wish to call it, plays an important part in trading. Some will even go so far as to say it's the most important part.

Does that mean being good at Game Boy translates into being a good trader? Absolutely not! But video games require a similar skill to one that is needed to succeed as a trader in our world.
